Il lavoro di Kuhn ha passato il test del tempo. La depressione cronica è uno dei problemi più gravi del della nostra era. Una malattia dell'anima conosciuta già nella Grecia antica: Kuhn non lascia dubbi sul fatto che l'apatia e la tristezza che la contraddistinguono non siano un mero prodotto del nostro periodo - sebbene questi sintomi si siano acuiti nel nostro tempo. Several distinguished and not-so-distinguished reviewers all over the globe lavished their clear judgement and words in praising and/or (heavens forbid!) demolishing "The Memory of Dead Romances" ...what amused me more is that they proceeded in their valuable work
absolutely ignoring the booklet with came along with this Demo. Let's chalk it up to the completely black cover - for some people it's no great art, or maybe they believed in a failure of the photocopy machine...those machines must come from hell, anyway. Or maybe they didn't have a clue about whose quote that was, and just didn't want to seem somewhat illiterate.
The Sand graciously recognizes anyway that it's quite a hard guess - unless you're a regular to English literature classes.
The booklet contains a quote from the novel"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. I don't think the book in itself needs any sort of introduction.
I will humbly reproduce that quote below:

"He saw that there was no mood of the mind that had not its counterpart in the sensuous life, and set himself to discover their true relations, wondering what there was in frankincense that made one mystical, and in ambergris that stirred one's passions, and in violets that woke the memory of dead romances, and in musk that troubled the brain, and in champak that stained the imagination; and seeking often to elaborate a real psychology of perfumes, and to estimate the several influences of sweet-smelling roots and scented, pollen-laden flowers; of aromatic balms and of dark and fragrant woods; of spikenard, that sickens; of hovenia, that makes men mad; and of aloes, that are said to be able to expel melancholy from the soul"

Una Breve Biografia di "The Sand"

The story so far...

Non ricordo esattamente quando cominciammo a suonare, A dire il vero non ricordo neanche quando iniziai a cantare, poiché sono passati quasi 10 anni da allora, ed ai tempi bevevamo veramente tanto. Mettiamola così: dopo aver fatto quello che tutte la band fanno (suonare cover dei Sex Pistols e dei Nirvana, cambiare cantanti e bassisti con una certa frequenza etc. etc.), l’ultima e più stabile formazione del Gruppo-senza-nome (non abbiamo mai pensato di dare un nome alla band) si riunisce nel 97 per creare un demo. Grazie alla assoluta mancanza di mezzi il tempo impiegato per il demo è tantissimo: solo nel 1998 i 5 pezzi del "Demo 98” sono pronti. Purtroppo, da quest'unica registrazione, non traspare minimamente la forza devastante che riuscivamo a produrre nei giorni in cui eravamo in forma, ma ne siamo ancora soddisfatti. Poco dopo la realizzazione, però, il gruppo decise di sciogliersi per i troppi impegni privati.

E’ da qui che nasce nel ’99 l’esperimento “The Sand”.

….The Present...

Racimolati a fatica i soldi per un computer, decisi di dar vita a quei pezzi che da anni componevo ma che erano troppo dark ed elettronici per un gruppo fondamentalmente rock. Il primo ”parto” è “The memory of dead romances”, un mix di stili che vanno dal rock di The Sisters of Mercy all’elettronica aggressiva dei Prodigy, includendo anche la cover di "Transmission” dei Joy Division. Sinceramente, i miei pezzi non sono nati con l'idea di pubblicarli: semplicemente, non ho mai potuto fare a meno di scrivere e suonare musica. L'idea di creare un disco è venuta molto dopo e mi ha impegnato per molto tempo. Per questo "The Memory..." suona come una raccolta di brani scritti in tempi diversi. E' inevitabile: la prima versione di "Prayers", per esempio, è del '96, la prima di "Chances" è del 2001.

In questo disco c'è molto di me e un pò della musica che amo. "The Sand" è nato perchè penso che ci sia qualcun altro là fuori interessato a qualcosa di simile, e questo è tutto.
